| How Beth Used the 5-Step Research Process |
| Step 1: Write down what you know. |
Beth knew some information about her ancestors in Schuylkill County and Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. She
wanted to go on a research field trip to Pennsylvania to learn more about her great-grandfathers. |
| Step 2: Decide what you want to learn. |
Beth planned her trip and decided that an objective of her trip would be to find out if and where in Clearfield
County, Pennsylvania her great-grandfather, Benjamin Ellis, was buried. |
| Step 3: Choose a source of information. |
She knew the cemetery was the source, but she didn't know how many cemeteries there were and where they were located.
So, she went to the Clearfield County Historical Society and, with some help from the local historian, determined where her great-grandfather was most likely buried. |
| Step 4: Learn from the source. |
Beth was able to locate the correct cemetery. When she found his grave, his old, marble headstone was leaning at a
dangerous angle, ready to topple. But, she verified the date of her great-grandfather's death and now knew for certain where he was buried. |
| Step 5: Use what you learned. |
When she returned home from her trip, she shared the experience and findings with her family! |
